Fair trade vs. Free trade http://fairworldproject.org Wouldn't it be great if public policies benefited the public, so everyone could prosper, and so-called "free trade agreements" valued our precious resources rather than exploiting people and the planet? Usually, TTT is less concerned with subjects like the TPP than we are teepees and HERCs and the local NAACP, among the many state, local and regional issues confronting our listeners and viewers. The other is that the likes of Congressman Keith Ellison, the Minnesota Fair Trade Coalition and MN2020, the think tank often devoted to economic development are zeroing in on this issue. TTT's ANDY DRISCOLL and MICHELLE ALIMORADI query the people willing to step forward and discuss the issue -- and that does NOT include any of the companies whose perspectives we sought for this show but who all refused. The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a massive trade deal between 12 pacific-rim countries -- the United States, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam. Together these countries account for nearly 40 percent of global output and 26 per cent of world trade. That makes the TPP one of the biggest trade deals in human history. Although the TPP has been in negotiations for quite some time, it was formally signed on February 4 in New Zealand. The TPP promises to increase wealth and incomes in the US and create new jobs while facilitating and protecting trans-national investment and trade. The deal is likely to be the economic pillar of the US strategy of rebalancing towards Asia. The TPP has to be ratified by the legislatures of the participating countries before it is implemented. Two years have been provided for ratification. The ratification process is not going to be easy in the United States in the middle of a Presidential election year. At least six of the participating countries, accounting for 85 per cent of the GDP of all the signatories, have to ratify the deal within two years for it to come into effect. China, despite being a Pacific-rim country and the largest economy in the world, is not a part of the TPP. Many suggest that the deal seeks to isolate China as Beijing and Washington vie for influence in the Asia-Pacific. China, however, has given a cautious welcome to the deal. It is expected that it will apply to join the TPP at a future date.

At first, plants which grew locally would have been cultivated, but as time went on, trade brought exotic crops from elsewhere to add to domestic types. Nowadays, most vegetables are grown all over the world as climate permits, and crops may be cultivated in protected environments in less suitable locations. China is the largest producer of vegetables, and global trade in agricultural products allows consumers to purchase vegetables grown in faraway countries. The scale of production varies from subsistence farmers supplying the needs of their family for food, to agribusinesses with vast acreages of single-product crops. Depending on the type of vegetable concerned, harvesting the crop is followed by grading, storing, processing and marketing. Vegetables can be eaten either raw or cooked and play an important role in human nutrition, being mostly low in fat and carbohydrates, but high in vitamins, minerals and fiber. Many governments encourage their citizens to consume plenty of fruit and vegetables, five or more portions a day often being recommended.
